Hi, my name is Tyler! I was born and raised in southwest Virginia near the town of Wytheville with a love of nature and electronics. I'm married to my beautiful wife Natasha but I'm still trying to figure out how I conned her into it. I've always been a bit of a nerd so you can often find me trying to learn new things. Fun fact, my thirst for knowledge is actually a big reason for me deciding to become a dietitian in the first place. Nutrition often gets overlooked because most people feel like it's all about fruits, vegetables, and forgetting about all the other foods you love. Fortunately, I've learned that it's so much more than that. My passion for learning led to my love of teaching. This always drives me to make sure that everyone I work with, gets all of their questions answered and leaves with a complete understanding of their own nutrition needs. I'm also a great listener so even if you aren't sure if I can help, give me a call and I promise to give you my all!
-Earned my Bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise at Virginia Tech (VT) in 2016.
-Completed my dietetic internship at VT the following year in 2017.
-Passed my certification exam and officially became a Dietitian on January 6th, 2018. Yes, I was very excited!
-My work experience until now has largely focused on home-based primary care and in hospitals near Wytheville and neighboring communities in the region.
-I also regularly participate in continuing education opportunities to maintain my certification and improve my nutrition prowess!
One of the most important parts of life is to be happy with who you are, no matter what. With that in mind, I find that it's often easiest to be proud of yourself based on how you feel and that starts with great nutrition. The foods that you eat have the most impact on how you feel because like they say, you are what you eat. There's a lot of truth to that saying but fortunately it's not entirely true, otherwise I'd be a taco by now. My goal is to teach, coach, and support you on your your journey to meet your nutrition goals. Real change comes by making true lifestyle changes, which is something you'll never get from the "one-size fits all" mentality of self-care.
Most people in society are often under the impression that getting sick is unavoidable and that the only way to "get healthy" is to go to the doctor but nothing could be further from the truth! The food you put in your body has a major impact on how often you may get sick and how bad it is when you do. Good nutrition isn't just for adults, the same is just as true throughout our entire lives. Staying healthy is rated E for everyone! So whether it's weight loss for you, fixing a food allergy for a toddler, or just better health for the whole family, I'm here to help guide you to the next step!
First thing's first, what is Medical Nutrition Therapy or MNT? MNT put simply is using nutrition-focused therapies to treat medical problems. Some common examples would be working with a Dietitian to limit junk food if you have diabetes or cutting back on salt if you're having heart problems. However, the number of things that can be fixed or improved through nutrition treatments are absolutely enormous and can include things like thyroid problems, pregnancy, and long-term illness. You'll be amazed at how much can be fixed just by making small changes in what you eat! The best part is, you won't be doing it alone!
